Skimming and Scanning Techniques

Skimming

Purpose:
To get the general idea of the text.

How to Skim:
Read the title, headings, and subheadings.
Look at the introduction and conclusion.
Glance at the first and last sentences of paragraphs.

When to Use:
When you need a quick overview or are deciding if the text is relevant.

Scanning

Purpose:
To find specific information quickly.

How to Scan:
Focus on keywords or phrases related to your question.
Move your eyes quickly over the text until you find the information.

When to Use:
When looking for dates, names, statistics, or specific details.

Identifying Main Ideas and Supporting Details

Main Idea

Definition:
The central point or argument of the text.

How to Identify:
Often found in the introduction or conclusion.
Look for repeated concepts or themes.
Pay attention to the thesis statement in academic texts.

Supporting Details

Definition:
Information that explains, proves, or expands the main idea.

How to Identify:
Supporting details are often found in the body paragraphs.
Ask yourself how each detail connects to the main idea.
Look for examples, statistics, and explanations that reinforce the main idea.

Reading Comprehension Strategies

Active Reading

Annotate:
Write notes, highlight key points, and mark confusing sections.

Ask Questions:
What is the author’s purpose? What evidence supports the main idea?

Summarize:
After reading, briefly summarize the text in your own words.

Dealing with Difficult Texts

Break it Down:
Divide the text into smaller sections.

Look Up Unfamiliar Words:
Keep a dictionary handy to understand new vocabulary.

Reread:
Sometimes, reading a passage again can help clarify complex ideas.
