Today, we’ll focus on describing experiences.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to use the present perfect tense to talk about your life experiences, such as places you’ve been and things you’ve done.

Present Perfect Tense

Form:
Have ◦ Has + past participle

Examples:
◦ I have been to Paris.
◦ She has seen that movie.

Usage:
To talk about experiences at an unspecified time in the past.

We use have or has followed by the past participle of the verb.

The present perfect is used to talk about experiences at some point in the past without specifying exactly when they happened.

Common Past Participles

Examples:
Go → gone/been
See → seen
Do → done
Visit → visited
Eat → eaten

For regular verbs, you just add -ed, like visit becomes visited.

For irregular verbs, the past participle is often different.
Example: go becomes gone

It’s important to remember these irregular forms for the present perfect tense.

Phrases for Describing Experience

Here are some useful phrases for describing experiences.

Examples:
◦ I have traveled to…
◦ She has tried…
◦ They have visited…
◦ He has never…

These phrases are great for talking about your past experiences.

Complete the sentences using the present perfect tense:

1. I (visit) __________ many countries.
2. She (try) __________ sushi.
3. They (never/go) __________ skiing.

Pair up with a classmate and ask each other about your experiences using the present perfect tense. Use questions like:

1. Have you ever been to another country?
2. What new foods have you tried?
3. Have you ever done something adventurous?

Life Experiences

Match the experience with the correct present perfect phrase:

1. Traveled to another country
2. Tried a new food
3. Visited a famous landmark

Writing About Your Experiences

Assignment:
Write a short paragraph about your experiences.

Use at least three sentences in the present perfect tense
I have traveled to…, I have never….
