Today, we’ll focus on talking about hobbies and interests.

You’ll learn how to use verbs followed by gerunds.

We’ll also expand your vocabulary with words related to hobbies and interests and practice asking and answering questions about your favorite activities.

Verbs Followed by Gerunds

Examples:
◦ I enjoy swimming.
◦ She likes reading books.
◦ They dislike watching TV.

Rule:
After certain verbs, use the gerund form (verb + -ing).

When we talk about hobbies, we often use verbs like enjoy, like, or dislike.

These verbs are followed by a gerund, which is the -ing form of a verb.

Remember, after these verbs, we don’t use the infinitive form—we use the gerund.

Common Hobbies and Interests

Examples:
Playing sports - soccer, tennis
Listening to music
Cooking
Painting
Hiking

People often enjoy activities like playing sports, listening to music, cooking, painting, or hiking.

Think about your own hobbies—what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Give advice for the following situations:

1. Your friend is feeling stressed.
2. Someone is thinking about quitting their job.
3. A family member is having trouble sleeping.

Complete the following sentences with your own hobbies:

1. I enjoy __________.
2. On the weekends, I like __________.
3. In my free time, I love __________.

Questions to Ask:

1. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
2. Do you have any hobbies?
3. How do you like to spend your weekends?

Discussing Hobbies

In pairs, ask and answer questions about your hobbies and interests.
Use verbs followed by gerunds, such as enjoy, like, love, etc.

Hobbies and Interests

Match the hobby with the correct verb:

1. Listening to music → I love listening to music.
2. Cooking → She enjoys cooking Italian food.
3. Playing tennis → They like playing tennis on weekends.

Writing About Your Hobbies

Assignment:
Write a short paragraph about your hobbies and interests.

Use at least three verbs followed by gerunds
enjoy, like, love.
