Welcome to our A2 English Course!

Today, we’ll focus on giving advice.

By the end of the lesson, you’ll be able to use modal verbs like should, ought to, and must to give advice.

We’ll also practice how to give and receive advice in various everyday situations.

Objectives

• Learn to use modal verbs (should ◦ ought to ◦ must) to give advice.

• Expand vocabulary with phrases for giving and receiving advice.

• Practice giving advice in different situations through role-play.

Grammar Focus

Using "Should" for Giving Advice

Examples:
You should drink more water.
They should study harder for the exam.
We should leave early to avoid traffic.

Rule:
Use "should" + base verb to give advice or suggestions.

We use 'should' to give advice or make suggestions.

It’s a soft way of advising someone to do something, without being too forceful.

Grammar Focus

Using "Ought To" for Stronger Advice

Examples:
◦ You ought to apologize for what you said.
◦ She ought to see a doctor.
◦ They ought to be more careful.

Rule:
Use "ought to" + base verb to give stronger advice, often indicating a moral obligation.

'Ought to' is similar to 'should', but it’s a bit stronger.

It often implies a moral obligation or something that’s more serious.

It’s still polite, but it carries a bit more weight than 'should'.

Grammar Focus

Using "Must" for Strong Obligations

Examples:
◦ You must stop smoking.
◦ He must finish the project by tomorrow.
◦ We must follow the rules.

Rule:
Use "must" + base verb to give very strong advice, often indicating necessity or obligation.

This is used for very strong advice or when something is necessary.

This isn’t just advice—it’s more of a requirement or an obligation.
