Describing Appearance

Examples:

Tall ◦ short ◦ medium height

Blond ◦ brown ◦ black hair

Curly ◦ straight ◦ wavy hair

Blue ◦ green ◦ brown eyes

Describing Personality

Examples:

Friendly ◦ shy ◦ outgoing

Kind ◦ generous ◦ helpful

Serious ◦ funny ◦ creative

Lazy ◦ hardworking ◦ energetic

These words help paint a picture of what someone is like as a person.

Adjective Order in English

Examples:
◦ A tall, blond man with curly hair
◦ A friendly, hardworking woman
◦ A small, green-eyed child

In English, when we use more than one adjective to describe a person, we usually follow a specific order:
◦ opinion
◦ size
◦ age
◦ shape
◦ color
◦ origin
◦ material
◦ and purpose.

Example:

a tall, blond man with curly hair follows this order.

This might seem complex, but with practice, it becomes easier.

Describing Appearance

Describe the following people:

1. Your best friend.
2. A famous celebrity.
3. Your favorite teacher.

Example:
My best friend is tall with curly brown hair and blue eyes.

Describing Personality

Describe the personality of:

1. Your sibling or a close friend.
2. Your favorite fictional character.
3. Yourself.

Example:
My sister is very kind and hardworking, but she can also be shy in new situations.

Describing People

In pairs, role-play the following scenarios:

1. You’re introducing your friend to a new person
describe your friend’s appearance and personality.

2. You’re at a job interview
describe yourself and your strengths to the interviewer.

3. You’re talking to a travel agent
describe the kind of people you enjoy traveling with.

Match the following adjectives to their definitions:

1. Energetic
2. Shy
3. Blond
4. Outgoing

a) Quiet and not comfortable with talking to new people.
b) Full of energy and enthusiasm.
c) Sociable and friendly; enjoys being with people.
d) Light yellow hair color.

Describing People

Assignment:

Write a short paragraph describing a family member or friend.

Include both their appearance and personality traits.

Use the vocabulary and adjective order we’ve practiced today.
