Vocabulary: Family Members

Let's start by learning some vocabulary for family members.

These words will help you talk about your family.

Father

Look at the pictures and match them with the correct family member.



Family Tree

Here’s a simple family tree. It shows how family members are related to each other. Let's go through it together.

Exercise:
Identify who is who in the family tree.

For example

◦ Who is Mary's aunt?

Possessive Adjectives

Now, let's learn how to use possessive adjectives to talk about who owns or belongs to something.

Possessive adjectives show that something belongs to someone.

I → My
This is my brother.

You → Your
Is that your sister?

He → His
His father is tall.

She → Her
Her mother is kind.

We → Our
Our family is big.

They → Their
Their house is nice.

Exercise:
Fill in the blanks with the correct possessive adjective.

Examples:
1. This is ___ (my) father.
2. Is that ___ (your) brother?
3. ___ (Their) house is big.

Describing Your Family

Now, let's practice describing our families.

You can use the vocabulary and possessive adjectives we just learned.

◦ My family is small/big.
◦ I have two brothers and one sister.
◦ His mother is a teacher.
◦ Their grandparents live in the countryside.

Exercise:
Write three sentences about your family.
Use possessive adjectives and family vocabulary.

Examples:

◦ Her cousin is very funny.

Vocabulary: Friends

Next, let's talk about friends.

Here are some words you can use to describe your friends.

Exercise:
Write a sentence about your best friend using one of these words.

Example:
My best friend is very kind.

Describing Relationships

Now that we know how to talk about family and friends, let's put it all together.

We'll describe our relationships with these people.

◦ Sarah is my best friend.
◦ John is my classmate.
◦ My brother is younger than me.
◦ Their parents are very nice.

Exercise:
Describe your relationship with one family member and one friend.

Practice Conversations

Let's practice having conversations about our families and friends.

Use the vocabulary and sentences we've learned.

P1: Do you have any brothers or sisters?

P2: Yes, I have one sister. She is younger than me.

P1: What about friends? Who is your best friend?

P2: My best friend is Sarah. We go to the same school.
