Today, we’re going to talk about festivals and celebrations. We’ll learn vocabulary for different holidays and celebrations, practice talking about your favorite holidays, and use the simple present tense to discuss regular events.

Vocabulary for Holidays and Celebrations

Let’s start by learning some common words for different holidays and celebrations.
This will help you talk about your favorite festivals.

Birthday:
The day when someone was born, celebrated every year.

Christmas:
A holiday celebrated on December 25th, often with gift-giving and decorations.

New Year’s Eve:
The night before New Year’s Day, often celebrated with parties and fireworks.

Easter:
A holiday in the spring that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Halloween:
A holiday on October 31st, where people dress in costumes and children collect candy.

Wedding:
A ceremony where two people get married.

Anniversary:
The yearly celebration of a significant event, like a wedding.

Exercise:
Match the celebration with its description:

Talking About Favorite Holiday

Now, let’s practice talking about your favorite holidays. You can use the vocabulary we just learned to describe why you like these holidays.

◦ My favorite holiday is Christmas because I love giving and receiving gifts.

◦ I enjoy Halloween because I like dressing up in costumes.

◦ I celebrate my birthday with my family and friends every year.

◦ New Year’s Eve is exciting because of the fireworks and parties.

Example Dialogue:

A: What is your favorite holiday?

B: My favorite holiday is Eid because I love spending time with my family.

A: How do you celebrate Eid?

B: We have a big family lunch and go to mosque.

Exercise:
Practice talking about your favorite holiday with a partner.

Simple Present Tense for Regular Events

Let’s review the simple present tense and learn how to use it to talk about regular events and celebrations.

I celebrate:
I celebrate my birthday every year with a party.

We decorate:
We decorate the house for Christmas in December.

They visit:
They visit their grandparents every Thanksgiving.

She cooks:
She cooks a special meal for Easter.

Example Sentences:

◦ They have a barbecue on Independence Day.
◦ She sends cards to her friends on their birthdays.

Complete the sentences using the correct form of the verb:

Describing Your Favorite Holiday

Now, let’s put everything together and practice describing your favorite holiday.
Use the vocabulary and the simple present tense to talk about what you do to celebrate.
