Today, we’re going to talk about dining out at a restaurant. We’ll learn vocabulary related to restaurants, practice ordering food and drinks, and use basic phrases that will help you when you go out to eat.

Vocabulary for Restaurants

Let’s start by learning some common words you might hear or use when you’re at a restaurant.

Menu:
A list of food and drinks that you can order in a restaurant.

Waiter ◦ Waitress:
The person who takes your order and brings your food.

Order:
To ask for food or drinks in a restaurant.

Bill ◦ Check:
A statement of how much you need to pay for your meal.

Appetizer ◦ Starter:
A small dish served before the main meal.

Main course:
The main dish of your meal.

Dessert:
A sweet dish usually served at the end of a meal.

Table for two:
A table for two people.

Ordering Food and Drinks

Now, let’s practice how to order food and drinks in a restaurant. You’ll learn the key phrases you need to know.

Waiter: Are you ready to order?

Customer: Yes, I’ll have the chicken salad, please.

Waiter: What would you like to drink?

Customer: I’ll have a glass of water, please.

Waiter: Anything else?

Customer: No, that’s all for now, thank you.

Useful Phrases:

What’s today’s special?
Asking about the special dish of the day.

Asking for the menu.

Basic Phrases for Dining Out

Here are some basic phrases you can use when you’re dining out. These will help you communicate with the waiter and enjoy your meal.

◦ Excuse me, could I have the bill, please?
◦ Do you have any vegetarian options?
◦ Could you bring me some more water, please?
◦ This dish is delicious!
◦ Could you recommend a dessert?
◦ Is service included?
◦ Asking if the tip is included in the bill.

Example Dialogue:

A: Can we have a table for two, please?

B: Certainly, right this way.

A: Excuse me, could I have the bill, please?

B: Of course, I’ll bring it right over.

Exercise:
Practice using these phrases in a role-play with a partner.
One person will be the waiter, and the other will be the customer.

B: Sure, I’ll be right back.

Describing a Meal

Now, let’s talk about how to describe the food and drinks you order.
You can use simple adjectives to express your opinions.

Delicious:
The food tastes very good.

Tasty:
The food has a pleasant flavor.

Spicy:
The food has a hot or strong flavor.

Sweet:
The food has a lot of sugar.

Salty:
The food has a lot of salt.

Fresh:
The food is made with fresh ingredients.

Listening Practice

Role-Play Practice

Let’s practice everything we’ve learned today with a role-play activity. One person will be the waiter, and the other will be the customer. Use the vocabulary and phrases we discussed.

Example Role-Play:

Customer: Can we have a table for two, please?

Waiter: Certainly, right this way.

Customer: I’d like the spaghetti and a glass of orange juice, please.

Waiter: Anything else?

Customer: No, thank you. Could we have the bill, please?

Exercise:
Take turns playing the roles of the waiter and the customer. Practice ordering food, asking for the bill, and using basic phrases for dining out.
