Today, we will talk about house and home. We’ll learn vocabulary for different rooms and furniture, practice describing your home, and use 'there is' and 'there are' to talk about what is in your home.

Vocabulary for Rooms

Let’s start by learning some common words for the different rooms you might find in a house.

Living room:
A room where people sit, relax, and watch TV.

Kitchen:
A room where food is cooked and meals are prepared.

Bedroom:
A room where people sleep.

Bathroom:
A room where people bathe and use the toilet.

Dining room:
A room where meals are eaten.

Hallway:
A passage in a house that leads to other rooms.

Exercise:
Match the room with its description:

1. A room where people sleep.
2. A room where food is cooked.
3. A room where people relax.

Vocabulary for Furniture

Now, let’s learn some vocabulary for common furniture that you might find in different rooms.

Sofa:
A comfortable seat for multiple people, usually found in the living room.

Table:
A piece of furniture with a flat top and legs, used for eating or working.

Chair:
A seat for one person, often found around a table.

Bed:
A piece of furniture for sleeping on.

Wardrobe:
A tall piece of furniture where clothes are stored.

Lamp:
A device that produces light, often found on a table or desk.

Exercise:
Match the furniture with the room it is usually found in:

Describing Your Home

Let’s practice describing your home using the vocabulary we’ve learned. We’ll talk about the rooms and furniture in your house.

◦ My house has three bedrooms.
◦ There is a sofa in the living room.
◦ In the kitchen, there is a table and four chairs.
◦ The bathroom has a shower and a sink.

Example Dialogue:

A: How many rooms are in your house?

B: There are six rooms. We have a living room, a kitchen, two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a dining room.

A: What is in your bedroom?

B: There is a bed, a wardrobe, and a lamp.

Exercise:
Practice describing your home with a partner.
Talk about the rooms and furniture in your house.

Example Dialogue:

A: What is in your living room?

B: There is a sofa, a table, and a TV.

Using "There is" and "There are"

Now, let’s learn how to use 'there is' and 'there are' to talk about what is in your home.
'There is' is used for singular nouns, and 'there are' is used for plural nouns.

◦ There is a bed in the bedroom.
◦ There are two chairs in the kitchen.
◦ There is a sofa in the living room.
◦ There are three windows in the dining room.

Example Sentences:

◦ There are two lamps in the living room.
◦ There is a wardrobe in the bedroom.
◦ There are four chairs in the kitchen.

Exercise:
Complete the sentences with 'there is' or 'there are':

Practice Describing a Home

Let’s put everything together and practice describing a home. Use the vocabulary for rooms and furniture, and remember to use 'there is' and 'there are'.
