Today, we’re going to talk about work and jobs. We’ll learn vocabulary related to different jobs and workplaces, talk about professions, and use the present simple tense to discuss daily routines.

Job and Workplace Vocabulary

Let’s start by learning some common words for jobs and places where people work. This will help you talk about different professions.

Doctor:
A person who helps sick people.

Teacher:
A person who teaches students.

Nurse:
A person who helps doctors and takes care of patients.

Engineer:
A person who designs and builds things.

Police Officer:
A person who keeps people safe and enforces the law.

Office:
A place where people work, often with computers.

Hospital:
A place where doctors and nurses work.

School:
A place where teachers work and students learn.

Store:
A place where people buy things.

Exercise:

Talking About Jobs and Professions

Now, let’s talk about different jobs and professions.
We’ll practice how to say what people do and where they work.

He is a doctor.
He works in a hospital.

She is a teacher.
She works in a school.

I am a student.
I study at school.

They are engineers.
They work in an office.

Example Dialogue:

A: What do you do?

B: I am a teacher. I work in a school.

A: Where does your brother work?

B: He is a doctor. He works in a hospital.

Exercise:
Practice talking about jobs with a partner.
Ask and answer questions about different professions.

Example Dialogue:

B: He is an engineer. He works in an office.

Present Simple Tense for Routines

Let’s review the present simple tense and learn how to use it to talk about daily routines at work.

I work:
I work in an office every day.

She teaches:
She teaches English to students.

He helps:
He helps sick people in the hospital.

They design:
They design buildings and roads.

Examples Sentences:

◦ I work from 9 AM to 5 PM.
◦ She teaches English on Mondays and Wednesdays.
◦ He helps patients in the hospital every day.
◦ They design new projects every week.

Exercise:
Complete the sentences using the correct form of the verb:

Talking About Your Job or Future Job

Now, let’s talk about what you do or what job you want to do in the future.
This will help you practice using the vocabulary and the present simple tense.

I am a student.
I want to be a teacher.

He is a doctor.
He helps people every day.

She wants to be an engineer.

Example Dialogue:

A: What do you do?

B: I am a student, but I want to be a doctor.

A: Why do you want to be a doctor?

B: Because I want to help people.

Exercise:
Practice talking about your current job or what you want to do in the future with a partner.

B: I want to be an engineer because I like designing things.
