Today, we will be talking about transportation. We’ll learn vocabulary for different types of transportation, how to ask for and give directions, and how to talk about your travel plans.

Vocabulary for Transportation

First, let’s learn some common words for different types of transportation.
These are words you’ll need to know when talking about how you get from one place to another.

Bus:
A large vehicle that takes many people from one place to another.

Train:
A vehicle that runs on tracks and is used for long-distance travel.

Car:
A small vehicle for a few people to travel in.

Bicycle/Bike:
A vehicle with two wheels that you pedal to move.

Taxi:
A car you can pay to take you to a specific place.

Airplane:
A vehicle that flies and takes you to faraway places.

Boat:
A vehicle that travels on water.

Asking for Directions

Next, let’s learn how to ask for directions when you need help finding a place. This is very useful when you’re traveling in a new city.

How do I get to the bus station?
Use this to ask for directions to a specific place.

Where is the nearest train station?
Ask this to find the closest train station.

Can you tell me the way to the airport?
Another way to ask for directions.

Examples Dialogue:

A: Excuse me, how do I get to the bus station?

B: Go straight and turn left at the traffic lights.

A: Thank you!

Exercise:
Practice asking for directions with a partner.
Choose different places and practice giving clear directions.

Examples Dialogue:

A: Where is the nearest train station?

B: It’s just around the corner, on the right.

Giving Directions

Now, let’s practice giving directions.
This is helpful if someone asks you how to get somewhere.

Go straight:
Keep going in the same direction.

Turn left:
Make a left turn.

Turn right:
Make a right turn.

It’s on your left/right:
The place is on the left or right side.

Go past the park:
Walk or drive by the park.

Examples Dialogue:

A: Can you tell me the way to the train station?

B: Sure, go straight, then turn right at the bank. It’s on your left.

Exercise:
Practice giving directions to a partner.
Use the map provided to help guide your partner to the correct place.

Example Directions:
Go straight, then turn left at the second street. The bus station is on your right.

Talking About Travel Plans

Finally, let’s learn how to talk about your travel plans.
This will help you share information about where you’re going and how you’re getting there.

I’m going to the airport by taxi:
Use this to say where you’re going and how.

We’re traveling by train to London:
Say how you’re traveling and where you’re going.

I’m taking a bus to the city center:
Another way to describe your travel plans.

Example Dialogue:

How are you getting to the airport?

I’m taking a taxi.

What about you?

I’m going by bus.

Exercise:
Practice talking about your travel plans with a partner.
Use different modes of transportation and destinations.

Example Dialogue:

A: How are you traveling to the beach?

B: I’m going by car.

Listening Practice

Let’s listen to a conversation about travel plans.
