Reading Passage:
(Campus Announcement)
University Library Hours Extended

Starting next semester, the university library will extend its hours of operation. The library will now be open 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday, to better accommodate students’ study schedules. This decision was made in response to feedback from students who requested more flexible hours, especially during exam periods. The extended hours will allow students to access library resources, including study spaces and computers, at any time. However, some services, such as the circulation desk, will only be available during regular business hours.

Listening Passage:
(Conversation between Two Students)

Speaking Task:
The man expresses his opinion about the university library’s new extended hours, and the woman gives a different opinion.

Describe the situation and explain which opinion you agree with and why.

Sample Answers

Task 1 (Independent)

Sample Response:

I enjoy visiting the beach because it offers a peaceful escape from my busy life. The sound of the waves and the fresh sea breeze help me relax and recharge. Additionally, I love the beach because it brings back fond memories of my childhood, where I spent countless summer days building sandcastles and playing in the water. The beach is special to me because it represents a perfect blend of relaxation, beauty, and nostalgia.

Task 2 (Integrated)

Sample Response:

The university has decided to extend the library hours to be open 24/7 from Monday to Friday, which has sparked different reactions among students. The man thinks this is a great idea because it provides a quiet place to study late at night when other places are closed. On the other hand, the woman is concerned about safety on campus late at night and also points out that without staff at the circulation desk, students might not be able to get the help they need.

I agree more with the man’s opinion. Having the library open 24/7 gives students greater flexibility to study whenever they need to, especially during busy times like exams. Although safety is a concern, the university can address this by increasing security during the late hours. As for the circulation desk being closed, students can still plan ahead to check out materials during regular hours or use the online resources available. Overall, the benefits of extended library hours outweigh the drawbacks, making it a positive change for students.
