Global issues are challenges that transcend national borders and require collective efforts to address.

By the end of this class, you’ll be better equipped to discuss global issues in a clear and impactful way.

Key Vocabulary for Discussing Global Issues

Climate Change

Global Warming:
The gradual increase in the Earth’s temperature.

Greenhouse Gases:
Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.

Carbon Footprint:
The total amount of greenhouse gases produced by human activities.

Poverty

Inequality:
The unequal distribution of resources and opportunities.

Socioeconomic Status:
An individual’s or group’s economic and social position relative to others.

Welfare:
Government programs designed to support those in need.

Human Rights

Civil Liberties:
Basic rights and freedoms that are guaranteed to individuals.

Social Justice:
The concept of fair and just relations between individuals and society.

Freedom of Speech:
The right to express one’s opinions publicly without censorship.

Economic Issues

Globalization:
The process by which businesses and other organizations develop international influence.

Recession:
A period of temporary economic decline.

Trade Agreements:
Treaties between two or more nations to outline how they will work together to ensure mutual benefit in trade.

Health Issues

Pandemics:
An outbreak of a disease that occurs on a global scale.

Healthcare Access:
The availability of medical services to individuals.

Vaccination:
The act of introducing a vaccine into the body to produce immunity to a specific disease.

Expressing Opinions

Use phrases like

to introduce your thoughts.
In my opinion, climate change is the most pressing issue of our time.

Agreeing/Disagreeing

Express agreement or disagreement respectfully with phrases such as:

◦ I see your point
◦ but…
I see your point about the economy, but I think we should also consider the environmental impact.

Providing Evidence

Support your arguments with
◦ data
◦ examples
◦ case studies.
According to recent studies, the global temperature has risen by 1.5 degrees Celsius in the last century.

Asking Questions

Engage others in the conversation by asking questions like
◦ What do you think?
◦ How do you feel about…?
What do you think is the most effective way to address poverty on a global scale?

These techniques will help you articulate your thoughts clearly and engage in productive discussions about global issues.
