Phrasal verbs are combinations of verbs and one or more particles (prepositions or adverbs) that, together, create a meaning different from the original verb.

For example, 'give up' means 'to stop trying' which is different from the meaning of 'give'.

In this class, we will cover:

Types of Phrasal Verbs

Transitive vs. Intransitive Phrasal Verbs

Transitive Phrasal Verbs require a direct object.

She put off the meeting.
the meeting is the object

Intransitive Phrasal Verbs do not take a direct object.

The plane took off.
no object

Separable vs. Inseparable Phrasal Verbs

Separable Phrasal Verbs allow the particle to be placed either after the verb or after the object.

They called off the event.
They called the event off.

Inseparable Phrasal Verbs do not allow the particle to be separated from the verb.

I came across an old friend.✓
I came an old friend across.✕

Note: Some phrasal verbs can be both transitive and intransitive depending on usage, and some separable phrasal verbs must be separated when using a pronoun as the object.

Example:
She put off the meeting.✓
She put it off.✓

Common Advanced Phrasal Verbs

Carry out - Transitive, Inseparable
to perform or complete a task.
The scientists carried out an important experiment.

Brush up on - Transitive, Inseparable
to improve knowledge of something.
I need to brush up on my French before the trip.

Come up with - Transitive, Inseparable
to think of an idea or solution.
She came up with a brilliant marketing strategy.

Pull off - Transitive, Separable
to succeed in doing something difficult.
He pulled off an amazing victory.

Run into - Transitive, Inseparable
to meet someone unexpectedly.
I ran into my old teacher at the bookstore.

Fall through - Intransitive
when a plan or agreement fails.
Our vacation plans fell through due to the pandemic.

Get around to - Transitive, Inseparable
to finally do something after delay.
I haven't gotten around to cleaning the garage yet.

Put up with - Transitive, Inseparable
to tolerate something unpleasant.
She can't put up with his rude behavior anymore.

Contextual Usage of Phrasal Verbs

Using phrasal verbs appropriately depends largely on the context and formality of the situation.

Formal vs. Informal Contexts

Formal Example:
The committee carried out an extensive review.

Informal Example:
We put off the meeting.

could also say: We postponed the meeting. in a more formal context

Transforming Sentences

Formal:
They abolished the old policy.

With Phrasal Verb:
They did away with the old policy.

Understanding Nuance and Tone

She passed away last night.
more respectful and sensitive

She died last night.
more direct
