Introduction to Certainty, Probability, and Doubt

Certainty:
Statements that express confidence or surety.

Probability:
Statements that indicate something is likely but not certain.

Doubt:
Statements that express uncertainty or skepticism.

Language for Expressing Certainty, Probability, and Doubt

Certainty:

◦ I’m sure that…
◦ There’s no doubt that…
◦ It’s certain that…
I’m sure that he’ll arrive on time.

Probability:

◦ It’s likely that…
◦ He’ll probably…
◦ There’s a good chance that…
It’s likely that we’ll finish early.

Doubt:

◦ I doubt that…
◦ It’s unlikely that…
◦ I’m not sure if…
I doubt that she’ll agree to the plan.

These phrases allow you to clearly express how sure or unsure you are about a situation.
