Introduction to Giving Advice and Suggestions

Why is it important?

Being able to give advice and make suggestions is essential in both personal and professional communication.

Key Modal Verbs:

Should:
General advice or recommendation

Ought to:
Stronger recommendation, often with a moral implication

Had better:
Strong advice, often with a sense of urgency or warning

Examples:

◦ You should see a doctor if you’re feeling unwell.
◦ He ought to apologize for his mistake.
◦ You had better study for the exam, or you might fail.

Grammar Focus

Modal Verbs for Advice and Suggestions

Should

Use:
For general advice or recommendations.

Example:
You should exercise regularly to stay healthy.

Ought to

Use:
For stronger advice, often linked to moral or ethical obligations.

Example:
You ought to help your neighbors if they’re in need.

Had Better

Use:
For urgent or strong advice, often with a negative consequence if ignored.

Example:
You had better leave now, or you’ll miss the train.

Key Differences:

"Should" is more general, while "ought to" and "had better" are stronger, with "had better" implying more urgency.
