Welcome to our A2 English Course!

Today, we're going to focus on talking about the past.

By the end of the lesson, you’ll be able to describe past activities using the simple past tense and common past-time expressions.

We'll practice by talking about what you did last weekend.

Objectives

• Learn to use the simple past tense for regular and irregular verbs.
• Expand vocabulary with common past-time expressions.
• Practice talking about past events, like what you did last weekend.

Simple Past Tense -Regular Verbs

Regular Verbs in the Past Tense

Examples:
Walk → walked
Play → played
Study → studied

Rule:
For regular verbs, add -ed to the base form of the verb.

This is a consistent pattern that applies to most verbs in English.

Simple Past Tense - Irregular Verbs

Irregular Verbs in the Past Tense

Examples:
Go → went
Eat → ate
See → saw

Tip:
Irregular verbs don't follow a set pattern, so they must be memorized.

It's important to practice these verbs regularly because they are commonly used in everyday conversations.

Vocabulary - Past-Time Expressions

Common Past-Time Expressions

Examples:
Yesterday
Last week
Two days ago
In 2010

Practice:
Which past-time expressions did you use last weekend?

To talk about when something happened, we use past-time expressions.

Phrases like
◦ yesterday
◦ last week, or
◦ two days ago
help to place your actions in time.

Example
I visited my friend yesterday.

Think about last weekend—what did you do, and when did you do it? Which of these past-time expressions can you use to describe your activities?

Practice - Regular Verbs

Convert the following present-tense sentences into the past tense:

1. I play soccer.
2. She studies English.
3. They walk to school.

Practice - Irregular Verbs

Convert the following present-tense sentences into the past tense:

1. I go to the park.
2. He eats breakfast.
3. We see a movie.
