Today, we are going to talk about places in town, learn vocabulary related to different places, practice using prepositions of place, and learn how to ask for and give directions.

Places in Town Vocabulary

Let’s start by learning some common places you might find in a town or city.
These words will help you describe where things are and how to get there.

School:
The school is next to the park.

Park:
There are many trees in the park.

Supermarket:
I buy food at the supermarket.

Bank:
The bank is on the corner.

Library:
The library is near the school.

Hospital:
The hospital is across from the bank.

Post office:
The post office is next to the supermarket.

Restaurant:
We eat at the restaurant.

Bus stop:
The bus stop is in front of the bank.

Prepositions of Place

Now that we know some places in town, let’s learn how to describe where they are using prepositions of place.
These words help us talk about the location of things.

In:
The park is in the city center.

On:
The bank is on Main Street.

Under:
The keys are under the table.

Next to:
The school is next to the park.

In front of:
The bus stop is in front of the bank.

Behind:
The library is behind the school.

Between:
The restaurant is between the bank and the post office.

Across from:
The hospital is across from the bank.

Exercise:
Fill in the blanks with the correct preposition:

1: The park is ___ the school.
2: The bank is ___ Main Street.
3: The library is ___ the school.

Asking for Directions

When you are in a new place, it’s important to know how to ask for directions.
Here are some questions you can use to find your way around.

◦ How do I get to the (library)?
◦ Where is the (supermarket)?
◦ Can you tell me the way to the (park)?
◦ Is there a (bank) near here?

Examples Dialogue:

A: Excuse me, where is the post office?

B: It’s next to the supermarket.

Exercise:
Practice asking for directions with a partner.
Use the vocabulary and prepositions we learned.

Examples Dialogue:

A: How do I get to the park?

B: The park is across from the library.

Giving Directions

Now, let’s practice giving directions.
When someone asks you how to get somewhere, you can use these phrases.

Go straight:
Go straight down this street.

Turn left ◦ right:
Turn left at the corner.

It’s on your left ◦ right:
The bank is on your right.

Go past:
Go past the supermarket and it’s on your left.

It’s next to ◦ between ◦ across from:
It’s next to the school.

Examples Dialogue:

A: How do I get to the restaurant?

B: Go straight, turn right at the bank, and the restaurant is on your left.

Exercise:
Practice giving directions with a partner.
Use the phrases we learned.

Examples Dialogue:

A: Can you tell me the way to the bus stop?

B: Go straight, and it’s in front of the bank.

Describing Locations

Let’s practice describing the location of different places in town.
Use the vocabulary and prepositions we learned.

◦ The supermarket is next to the bank.
◦ The park is between the school and the library.
◦ The bus stop is across from the restaurant.

Exercise:
Look at the map and describe where the places are using prepositions of place.
